Ingrid Baltzersen from Norway.

Condemns the attack on the Spanish Basque trade unions

Spanish police yesterday stormed offices of the Basque trade unions LAB and arrested six persons. Total ten persons are arrested in the last campain from the Spanish government, which cracks down on former members of the Basque party Batasuna.

Trade union Langile Abertzaleen Batzordeak (LAB) organizes around 32,000 workers in the Basque country, mainly in the Spanish section.

- This is one more attack on the Basque left pro Basque independence, says Ingrid Baltzersen, representative of the solidarity group - Free Basque Country. The Spanish government has banned political parties, they have arrested members of organizations that are engaged in cultural work, and they have closed newspapers and radio. The arrests and the closure occurred because members have had connection with the political party Batasuna, not because the individual person or organization has done anything illegal.

- The Spanish government gag freedom of speech and freedom of organization for the Basques, says Baltzersen.
